Hi
Have any of you guys any experience of running Ultra`s wearing Heart Rate Monitors to help maintain pace i.e. staying within a given zone.
Not long now folks. ;D

Not me but I'm not going to knock them. I've heard good reports of their use to prevent folk going off too fast, probably the biggest mistake the those new to ultra running can make.
Personally, a bit high-tech for me but then I struggle with a wristwatch. ;D

Thanks Tim i share your reservations however i wondered whether using technology to pace myself over a few ultr`s then downloading the info to my Pc for analysis might help me to hoan my training and push me over the plateau i seem to be stuck on.
Just thought i would see if folk have any ideas on the use of HRM
By the way i am logged on but the site won`t let me post and i can`t see Log OFF Either.

But i reckon i am going to have a crack at the HRM wristwatch SDM way of monitoring my highs and lows, then maybe when i see my heartrate barely elevated from resting i can convince myself that my body is not as tired as my brain says it is

OK i have bitten the bullet and am now the proud owner of a Timex Bodylink Trailrunner HRM, SDM wristwatch (Garmin Battery life no good for Ultra`s ) there were other factors that swung it for TIMEX but i reckon i can bore you plenty without going into them.
So now all i have to do is work out whats what and tune into my heart.
I i will keep you posted folks just in case somebody is interested ;D

Good luck with it john. I find the starp a pain I am ok wearing it for cycling and when doing turbo training it is required and keeps you right on track. I have worn the starp doing short intervals sessions but dont like it and the last time I wore strap on a long run almost chucked it away. It is a garmin I have and as you say battery life at best is around 10 to 12 hours but I really like the info / data you get from it for WHW I plan to swap Garmins on route as both my Suport crew have also.

Gee this is a revealation, i am still finding my way around the kit but the first thing i am noticing is what a fine line there is between to slow and too quick. I think my running is about to become structured

Morning George 12-14 hrs between the Fling and Lochaber Marathon is a taper isn`t it. Anyway it looks to me like i should be able to do a bit more if i get my pacing right as i figure i should have more energy ;D

I also found the HRM strap a pain and couldn't wear it for anymore than an hour without chafing. Each to their own though - I certainly would like to train with an HRM but too painful. I'd probably wait before getting a Garmin 405. New models are plagued with problems. I've not heard it's only an 8 hour battery but if it is that's not much use really is it.. Twat twat twat. Sorry, couldn't resist

Good to see some comment`s however i have now run 50 miles with the HRM strap without any problems what so ever (longest run 20miles with Day sac chest strap done up.
Maybe the Timex chest strap is different to the likes of Polar, Garmin etc i now it feels very soft and pliable and seems to just mold to me thankfully and to be honest i am finding it to be a boon i just wish i had started using one sooner.
The 8 hour battery life for the new garmin comes from there own spec for the device.
For me i am well happy with my Timex and its user replaceable battery's makes sense to me. ;D
