How long should my longest training run be?

Good question, Muffs, and one that's been nagging me too. I missed this year's race with a stomach bug, but had felt super confident of having a good run. My longest training run in distance was 27 miles in 4.30, but also did a 25.5 mile fell race, in 5.40 which has to be better training for this type of event, because of the extra time on your feet. I think you should just build up to whatever distance you feel happy with, everybody's different, after your long run you should be tired but not incapable of movement for the rest of the day! I tend to favour long slow runs with lots of climbing to build leg strength and stamina, also doing medium length runs(15 miles or so) on consecutive days, don't worry about times, this gets you used to running on tired legs. The forum's a bit inactive now, I think folks are gearing up for other things now, might be worth a look at the West Highland Way Race website forums for training tips

Hi
I have done 4 ultra now, all 40ish miles, all over tough terrain.
The longest training run was just under 30 miles and that was before the first ultra, the rest I have done with long runs up to 20 miles.
What is more important is training yourself to run slow enough or to walk run, work out your fluids and nutrition and cultivate your bloody mindedness
Enjoy, I hope I will be doing the Fling this year as well

For this event I would say 2 back to back runs which in total are the same as the event works well.
so perhaps around a 30 on sat and a 20 on Sunday 3 or 4 weeks out from race.
But I echo above time on feet is more important than distance covered.
Long days in the hills running walking etc are perfect.

Yep just like george says time on feet and back to back long runs, but i think like last year when i ran the FLING on saturday and LOCHABER marathon on suday, i have got it wrong, as it looks like i will be running Calderdale on Saturday then driving up for the Lochaber on sun, then driving back up to Scotland the following weekend for the FLING, damned good job my van runs on LPG.
Happy training Happy Days.
