This has to be the only ultra race I've ever done were they don't allow poles!!!
Considering they reduce injury to knees it seems rather odd to disallow them.

I believe it's a Scottish Athletics policy that poles are not allowed and that is the licensing body for the Fling.

I agree - almost all ultras allow poles, and it is a shame that The Fling bans them. If Scottish Athletics thinks they give an unfair advantage, then why not say that anyone using poles is not eligable for a prize or award? So the fastest 10% of the field wouldn't use them, but everyone else has the option.
Given the choice, I'd definitely use them on the uphills.
