;)Hi, first posting, a bit worried about this, I am new to ultra distances, did Tring to Town a few weeks back, a first for me of that distance, I loved it, and learnt a lot !I did it with some friends and we walked it mainly, Im doing the fling alone, and intend to use the same approach, ie walk/run with greater emphasis on the walking.I know most of you frown on us walkers, but for various reasons , thats my way now I feel. So was wondering, do others walk this event, as I dont want to feel totally out of place, and I really want to do this, Im preparing eventually for a walk in the Gobi Desert in 2010, so this is part of my prep.I hope to get a positive response, but feel free to criticise, I can take it Tricia

Hi Tricia
If you were to walk the whole distance you would have to average inside 17 mins per mile, their are parts of the route that you will be unable to be that fast , so that means you will have to run parts to finish within the time limits.
A run walk strategy is very sensible, Run when you can walk when you cant, run all the flats and downs and walk the ups.
The first section is the fastest and you could make some good time here but the danger is you burn your self out early on.
You will be starting 1 hour in front of Senior men and 2 hours in front of relay teams this should give you a boost when folks run past, just be sure to think on this as a positive and not a negative.
To conclude IMO you cant walk and finish within time limits you will have to run parts of it.
Good Luck

Hi You do not say at what level you walk but if you walk at the level of these folks :- www.racewalking.org/Then you will have no probs in fact you will probably beat several runners, but as george says rest on the ascents and pick up the pace on the descents and flat then i reckon 12-15 min miling should be easily obtainable depending on your level of fitness and Stamina. All the Best JohnK

;)Thanks, the info is useful, no Im not a racewalker sadly, but on a good day Im a strong walker. I am entering to complete , not for a place, If Im timed out so be it, all being said I really do want to cross the finish line within the time. Thanks again, hope to see you there. Tricia

go out for 3 hours and try out your planned strategy and see how fast you go, a good run walk strategy done from the start can really extend how far you can go without a massive reduction in speed.

;)Hi, thanks for the advice, all much appreciated. This was my sort of plan, just needed someone to put it down like this , to encourage me! I sometimes find I lose motivation, or just get scared rigid, and do nothing, all wrong !!Training is going OK, I used to run more, but recently due to tedious health issues, walking is now more for me, regretably, but sometimes reality knocks, and you have to respond. The run /walk approach will be my choice, hope there will be others doing the same, looking forward to the day, but still nervous ! Summer. Just noticed this post + though Id say hi (assuming youre the same Summer from the MDS forum ?). Mike + I are just back from Morocco + are entered for the fling and I can assure you we are VERY unlikely to be doing more than a gentle joggle / walk strategy so you wont be alone. Im sure youll also be glad to hear that you are likely to do more walking than running when you get to the desert too.

Yea right mark a tan between the bottom of his shorts and the top of his gaiters.
Did you know they let them sleep between the stages of that MDS (moist Dessert Stroll)

Hi Rich, yes its me, Tricia, I definitely will be doing this mainly by walking, and would love to have some company !I have been thinking mabe I am going to be totally out of my depth in this event, to put it mildly!I really want to come in under the time limit, but am not entirely confident on that one.Have accepted I well may be timed out !!Not being defeatest, more realistic.I seem to have stirred up a bit of a hornets nest here, by mentioning the dreaded word, walking, didnt mean to, just want to go out and give it my best shot. Congrats on the Mds as well, brave souls venturing out so soon after as well. Keep in touch, and hope to see you there, Tricia

You want be out of your depth, just do your own thing its a friendly event and you will find everyone very suportive. As john said earlier a good strong walk will beat some of the runners. Hope to see you on the start line. Dont be put off by the banter were nice honest. Well most of us not sure about DQ.

Not a hornet's nest Summer, just a bit of banter. As George says, this is a very friendly event. If you get timed out you get timed out but at least you'll have tried.
Good luck!

Spartathlon! Now that is more like it. How did it go last time Skinny Pete? Tough, tough race but with the thought of a lovely plate of Stiffado at the end, that must help.
If nothing else my toot should force most to speed up to try and get away from it. Thing is though, Satan's is worse. He still swears by naming the pocket dwarf 'Mini-Me'. I still say that 'dwarf-let' is better.

I finished and it was the beer sitting on the bar in Sparta that me got there. Last year was a good year with half the starters finishing. On a normal year only about 33% of the starters finish.
