Does anybody know how much ascent there is? I'm just trying to compare it to a recent event I did which had 5000 ft of ascent.

I think about 1080 mtrs so your fell race was probably harder than the Fling.

You don't know how pleased I am to here that. It was a 30 mile race but loads of us got lost and ended up doing closer to 40 miles. We had to use our hands on the floor to get up some of the hills. This was last Saturday and i'm still aching. That was my second ultra.

Don't think the "Fling" has much "hands on" running. Official figures are distance - 85 Kms & climb - 2,592 metres. No problem!

Here is the break down
Ascent (ft) Descent (ft) Ascent (m) Descent (m) Milngavie to Carbeth 487.00 225.00 151.00 69.00 Carbeth to Drmen 888.00 781.00 273.00 241.00 Drymen to Balmaha 957.00 1,433.00 287.00 433.00 Balmaha to Rowardennan 1,224.00 1,240.00 356.00 261.00 Rowardennan to Inversnaid 1,784.00 1,794.00 528.00 531.00 Inversnaid to Inverarnan 1,269.00 1,271.00 384.00 386.00 Inverarnan to Crianlarich 1,226.00 491.00 369.00 146.00 Crianlarich to Tyndrum 812.00 863.00 244.00 259.00
So 8647 feet or 2592 meters

If the link works you should find a profile here:- www.tyndrumbytheway.com/Img/WHWProfileLarge.jpgYep it works so as you will see not a lot of climbing to be done Well done on your second ultra, when your hands gravitate from the ground to your Knees in order to assist your legs as they pump you to the top of a hill which will also assist your breathing then you know you are in a race. Good luck

Thanks for your help. I think!! ! The important thing to remember is that averaged out over 50 odd miles that's as near as dammit flat. ;D

I'm a bit confused - so is it 1,080m or 2,592m? 2,592m seems like a lot - I would have though 1,080m sounds about right.

Hi Ali, that's cumulative climb rather than absolute difference in height between Milngavie & Tyndrum. You'd be surprised how all those little ups and downs add up. Of course, it does rather depend on how you measure it but I think the 2592m figure is from OS datum using Memory Map.

Hi Tim, George,
I found that ascent data on the West Highland Way website too - I'm still not convinced though...I suspect that it had been measured using a GPS, which always overestimates cumulative ascents.
Does the WHW really have half the ascent of the UTMB?

I know dario has done it the hard way also, data is about the same. My GPS data for sat was 3569 feet climb from Tyndrum to Kinlochleven and 4287 drop which is close to above.
Only half dont remind me. best go run up and down more hills.
At the end of the day it is what it is.
