I'm new to this distance so i'm just curious to see how others are doing so far in their training. Especialy other newbees. I did a 50k race two weeks ago, another this weekend. Then it's just one more testing weekend run of 25 miles on the Saturday followed by a 20 on the Sunday. That's going to be on the weekend of 4th April. Then the taper.
If any of you think I should be doing anything different your advice is welcome. Feeling pretty strong now. No niggles, aches or pains.

Hi Muffs, Glad to hear you're in good shape and looking forward to the Fling. Up until a couple of weeks ago I was struggling, not getting out enough and not doing many long runs, recently though things are looking up, getting mileage in and feeling ok, until last night that is when I got caught by a sharp twig or thorn or something. Felt a sting but ran it off, did another 12 miles and my leg seized up as soon as I got home! Fingers crossed for a couple of days, but overall pretty happy. See you there

Muffs Things were going fine ....... But then I hurt an ankle tendon three weeks ago on a 20 mile off road run. First time I've been injured in years. I have a difficult juggling act to do now. How long to take off? How little trainning can I get away with? Really don't want to give up but I haven't gone over a marathon before so I dont know how I'll go. When do I chuck the towel in and sign up for next year? Anyone got any thoughts?

Hi Sandyk,
I'm no expert but most training plans that i've looked at say 31 miles should be the longest run for a 50 miler and you still have a good 3 weeks before you need to get that in. Rest and ice as long as it takes but don't get back too soon. Your fitness will come back quicker than you expect. I did a 22 miler then damaged my achilles I rested for 4 weeks then went straight into a 30 miler. Although that's not recmmended it worked for me and i've had no bother from it since.

Thanks Muffs
That looks like a bit of a plan. I was certainly marathon fit before I got crocked. Hopefully I'm not loosing to much fitness. I'll try a run this weekend and see how it goes.
Funny, no mater how experienced you are, it's still so tempting to run too early on an injury.
I was hoping to go for a long day in the hills, mixing up walking and running.
I'm not going to be setting any records if I come down for the Fling, I'll be very happy just to finish.

I'll second that. I would love a time around 12 hours but to be honest I just want to finish and live to tell the tale. See you there. My name's Matt by the way i'll look out for you.

Injuries in 2005 meant that my longest run pre-whw race was 27 miles but I still finished. This year my running has been disastrous following a very slow to resolve back injury. Thankfully this is now clearing up and I'm now pretty sure that I'll be there on the start line and at the finish line. I hesitate to hazard a guess at my time. I'll just run to the best of my ability and enjoy the day.

Matt, Tim
Thanks for the encouragement.
Not bothered about the time which makes a nice change from obsessing about marathon times.
New pair of Saucony's arrived in the post today. It must be a sign!
Hope to see you at the start (and finish).

So Tim does that mean when I kick your arse it does not count because you were not trying. Glad your back running , excuse the pun, look forward to seeing you in a few weeks, I was informed this morning its 3 months to the day till WHW race, best start training then.

There has been no mention of nutrition. Can I suggest the quaffing of hand crafted Real Ale. It hydrates and is a valid form of carbo-loading (well in my head anyway). It has the added dimension of bring about a feeling of "one cannot be ar$ed" with regard to any injured body parts if taken in sufficient quantities.
